Education: Attended: Trinity, Yale, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and College of the City of New York, no degree awarded.
Stage Credits: Began theatrical performing while a student at Yale in 1875 .
His first professional appearance was at the Globe Theatre in Boston where he played in Macbeth,Romeo and Juliet,Othello,and Hamlet.
Some prominent appearances include: "Broken Hearts" William assumed the role of Florian in a stand-in performance.
"Esmeralda" which he Co-wrote with Frances Hodgson Burnett
"Sherlock Holmes" Originate the role in 1899. Performed in over 1300 'Holmes' plays.
In addition, William has written numerous Holmes scripts and produced and directed numerous 'Holmes' plays.
Wrote over 20 plays, including "The Professor" which he first staged in 1881, "Held by the Enemy" and "Secret Service"; two of his Civil War Plays.
In addition, Gillette has written two novels.
He has been an innovator of stage props, set design and theatre lighting.
